Learn More at Columbine Ford

We all know that it is incredibly easy to become distracted when you are driving, whether it is kids in the back seats asking for snacks or need to use the bathroom for the 100th time or your phone ringing, and it is important that we do everything we can to stay safe on the road. Ford has created technology that is there to help you with the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of features. One of the most prominent features in the suite is BLIS, or Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert. We are digging deep into the feature below to help you learn more about it, so keep reading!

What is BLIS?

Ford’s Blind Spot Information System can alert the driver to a vehicle detected in a difficult to see blind spot. Utilizing radar sensors in the rear of the vehicle on both sides, drivers are alerted to a vehicle detected in the blind spot with an indicator light on the side-view mirror. Your rearview mirrors on your Ford Fusion are not your typical mirrors that let you see traffic in the lanes around you, because they also alert you to vehicles that are hidden in your blind spots, making lane changes safer and drivers more confident.  The Cross-Traffic Alert feature uses the same radar to detect behind your Ford vehicle when you are backing slowly out of parking space or driveway. When the feature detects that another vehicle is approaching from either side, an indicator light will flash in the side view mirror just like the BLIS system. It also emits an audible warning in case the driver misses the visual indicator. The instrument panel also features a visual display message informing the driver of which direction the vehicle is coming from!

BLIS with Trailer Coverage

If you drive a Ford F-150 or an Explorer and pull a larger trailer, there is an enhanced version of the BLIS system available! This system not only covers the blind spots of the truck or SUV but also the trailer that you are towing. With Trailer Coverage, only conventional trailers are allowed and the system will automatically turn off when a gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer is attached. The system allows for trailer dimensions up to 9 feet wide and 33 feet long. Configuring your BLIS system with Trailer Coverage is super easy with the 5-way switch on the steering wheel! Just like with the BLIS system without Trailer Coverage, drivers will be alerted to the vehicle’s in their blind spots in the corresponding side-view mirror.
